Output hypothesis is a second language acquisition theory which emphasizes the importanceof language output in language acquisition by Swain (1985). It is widely used in foreign languageteaching since then. The foreign language teaching method based on output hypothesismainlyfocuses on speaking and writing in classroom application, which provide more speakingactivities for students in class, and emphasizes students’ practice to promote the internalizationof language ability. This study explores the application of this teaching method in Madagascar to teach adverbs ingeneral teaching situations. It compares the foreign language teaching method based on outputhypothesis with traditional method in the acquisition of Chinese adverbs. The subjects of this study were39undergraduate students of grade2012in the Confuciusinstitute at antananarivo university and LanChu university in Madagascar. The experiment mainlyadopted the language teaching method based on output hypothesis to acquire11Chinese adverbsby overseas students. The research questions are:1. is there any difference between the learning outcomes of the traditional method and theteaching method based on the theory of the output?2. how did Madagascar students acquire HSK level3levels of adverbs? Is there any changein their learning strategy and learning attitude? This studey adopts the combination of quantitative and qualitative research, through the useof pretest and posttest, and interview. The pretest showed that the experimental group and controlgroup were similar on the level of HSK vocabulary. After the experiment, the experimental groupshowed significant progress than the control group, which indicates that the language outputtheory has played aobvious role. The interview found that students’ learning interest and desireto learn Chinese are more intense. This research has the certain implications on Chinese language teaching. The traditionalforeign language teaching method pays attention to the input, especially in the overseas Chineselanguage teaching, and lacks language environment of the target language countries, thereforeoften ignores the oralChinese practice. The purpose of this paper is to provide Chinese languagelearners more opportunities to practice Chinese from the perspective of language output,. andfinds a quicker and more effective way to learn Chinese.
