As China's comprehensive national power is becoming stronger and stronger, the level of internalization is getting higher and higher. In this case, there are more and more foreigners coming to China. The first and the most frequent things they encounter are public signs. Therefore, the normalization and standardization of public signs should be paid much attention to.Experts and scholars in foreign language research circle did many studies on the translation of public signs, but almost all these studies focused on tourism, transportation, business and campuses. What a pity is that they hardly paid attention to the the translation of public signs of medical institutions, let alone the medical institutions in Tianjin. However, medical institutions are places where every single minute counts. No mistake is allowed there.Translation study has been developing over one hundred years. The theories and principles on this field grows rapidly one after another.Looking through extensively the papers on the translation of public signs,we can clearly find that it seems all the theories and principles can be applied to the studies on the translation of public signs. All the scholars hold their own views and it looks everyone can make himself clear. But most of them just points out mistakes on the basis of a theory and “invent” the versions of their own which they deem appropriate. However, these studies all neglect an important point, which is whether the target language speakers accept the versions we invent.Realizing this problem, professor Lin Ke'nan proposed the “Kan,Yi,Xie” principle which provides a great method for translating public signs. If the target language has the corresponding text, what we should do is using it without any melioration. If the corresponding text cannot be found, translators should imitate a similar text based on the language features, writing conventions and culture elements. This thesis analyses many inappropriate translations of 6 medical institutions in Tianjin from four angles, which are low-level mistakes of words;words to words translation;inappropriate words selection;inconsistency based on the “Kan,Yi,Xie” principle. After each analysis, the acceptable version will be given.By the true data and systematic illustration,it aims to prove that the “the “Kan,Yi,Xie” principle has a huge significance when translating public signs.Wish this thesis can catch the eyes of related authorities in order to put the reform of the translation of public signs on the agenda. If the mistakes are corrected and the standard is normalized, our city image can be elevated with no doubt.Furthermore, the author specifically discusses the morphology of medical terminologies in chapter five. There are three tables summarizing the prefixes, roots, suffixes and their meanings of medical terminologies in order to provide a modicum of help for the subsequent researches in this field.
