Under the control of foreign inspector general of Customs,the modern Chinese Customshas broad and profound influence on different fields of Modern Chinese society.As one of theChinese Customs during the modern Chinese,Kiungchow Customs is an important institutionin the process of modernization of Hainan Island. In the period of the Republic of China, it isworthy to study the Customs because the institution has got a great change. What’s more,under the supervision of Kiungchow Customs, the trade of Hainan changed a lot. KiungchowCustoms plays a significant role in the development of Hainan society. The change ofKiungchow Customs and its impact on Hainan society in the period of the Republic of Chinais worthy to do a further research.The preface of this thesis reviews the research results on this topic in academic circlesand introduces the research method and value. The text is divided into four chapters. The firstchapter mainly introduces Kiungchow Customs’ administration and management in the earlyperiod of the republic of China. It bases on the study of Joan customs the institutionsthemselves. The second chapter focuses on the analysis of Kiungchow Custom’s tradesituation in the early Republican. The third chapter analyses the impact of KiungchowCustoms on Hainan society in the early Republican. The fourth chapter discusses the impactof economic, trade, and society on Hainan Island during the period that Hainan was occupiedby Japanese. Finally, this paper analyses the poor management of the customs trade under thecontrol of the Nationalists.At the last part, this paper summarizes the characteristics ofKiungchow Customs during the period of Republic of China, evaluates Kiungchow Customs’activities during the period of the Republic of China and analyses its influence on the Hainansociety.
