In1995, the young director Hirokazu Koreeda participated in the Venice Film Festival with his first feature film called" Maboroshi no Hikari " and won the Golden Osella for Best Director. Shot by Hirokazu, who used to be a documentary filmmaker with the first attempt to shoot a plot film,"Maborosi no Hikari" tells the story of how a woman, facing the loss of life due to her husband’s suicide for no reason, had to live alone and gradually regain the hope of life. Thereafter, Hirokazu Koreeda maintained the creation speed of shooting a plot movie every three years on average in a consistent rigorous manner, using his delicate lens language to explore the timeless theme of "life and death", which has been well represented in the movies of "Wonderful Life","Distance", etc. In2004, the movie of a special family theme "Nobody Knows" was amazingly received at Cannes, and the14-year-old Yuya Yagara also became the youngest winner in the history of Cannes for his vivid and sound acting. Years of filmmaking career has enabled Hirokazu Koreeda to control the lens in a calm and restraint way. Upholding the highly rational thinking of life, his image style travels between feature films and documentaries. With regards to regret and loss of life, he shows both retained and aloof calm as well as touching affection. As one of the Japanese cinema backbones in recent years, Hirokazu Koreeda always keeps a good distance which is not too far or too close to the mainstream aesthetic with the concern of the world and human feelings that are going on in the contemporary Japanese society at all times while haven’t caused corresponding attention. His films always leave the audience a lightweight appearance with a heavy kernel wrapped inside. In addition, under the influence of the Taiwanese director Hou Hsiao-hsien’s, Hirokazu Koreeda’s images are often used to do comparative study with Hou Hsiao-hsien’s or Yasujiro Ozu’s. However, since there is no systematic study or book written about Hirokazu Koreeda at home and abroad, a relatively big value in writing about him therefore exists.
