This paper, through the historical study on the timbre of Pipa and theoretical analysis of the basicskills in expressing the timbres of Pipa, probes into performance skills and artistic treatment of the basictimbres and varied timbres in playing Pipa. By citing the examples of the most representative works inabsolute Pipa music, modern music, concertos, and so on, this paper makes an in-depth analysis into thetimbre pronunciation skills, changes of tone and sound processing in playing Pipa so as to achieve theartistic sublimation of "humanization" timbre processing.Timbre is one of the key elements in the artistic expression Pipa works; the expression and variation oftimbre is one of the difficulties in playing Pipa. This paper is to explore the skills and artistic treatment ofPipa timbres in the following four chapters.Chapter one: the early development of Pipa timbres. This chapter probes into the early development ofPipa timbres from the reform and change of the shape and structure in different historical eras in thefollowing four sections. The first section mainly discusses Pipa timbres development in the Qin and HanDynasty; the second section, the dynasty of Jin and the Northern and Southern Dynasties; the third section,the Tang Dynasty; and the fourth section, the Ming and Qing dynasties.Chapter two: the basic timbres in playing Pipa. This chapter makes an analysis and treatment ofpoint-like timbres, line-like timbres and the combination of the two kinds of timbres.Chapter three: varied timbres in playing Pipa. This chapter analyzes artistic treatment of variedtimbres from the types, characteristics, applying skills of varied timbres, and so on.Chapter four: the timbre processing in playing different music works. This part is the focus of thispaper. Combining the writer’s years of playing all kinds of Pipa works and theoretical integration andanalysis, this chapter explores the approaches to applying the timbre expression techniques into managingthe timbre treatment in a humanized and artistic manner and makes a summary of the artistic features indealing with the timbres in various Pipa music works.
