Browsing pictures becomes the most convenient way of information dissemination in theInternet age. It will affect not only the lives of the public, but also the creation of artists, especially painters. Many painters would totally rely on a picture in the studio to complete apiece of work, which is just for finishing the task of creation while the soul of art is often lostwithout painter’s true feelings. This reality is very worthy of our vigilance and reflection.Throughout the modern collegiate art education, the most basic means of teaching is torely on sketching which has built not only the concept of traditional realism for generationsbut also the contemporary art teaching system. However, sketching has been graduallymarginalized in the image era because of the convenience brought by browsing pictures. Eventhose painters who adhere to sketching also tend to shoot a lot of photos first and then make asecond creation based on the photos. This approach makes many traditional realist paintersgive up Sketch Creation and succumb to images. For teachers, such creation based on pictureswill not only lower their creation level, but also directly affect the students’ way of creation, resulting in their reduced ability of sketching. Undeniably, image era indeed offers painters alot of convenience, but getting too much involved also makes the artistic creation graduallyfossilized and visualized, lack of vigor and painting style. What’s worse, it will graduallyaffect painters’ understanding of the real world, and the expression of their spirit world. This paper discusses the marginalization of the traditional sketching because of theimpact from the image era, and identifies the meaning and the evolution of the concept"sketching" from the perspective of individual artistic practice, so as to change the current way of creation based on pictures and turn it back to sketching, thus regain the charm ofpainting.
