On The Role Of Escort Interpreters And Strategies Of Escort Interpreting From The Perspective Of Globalization And Glocalization

Based on the interaction of globalization and glocalization, this research aims to define the role of escort interpreters and to find out strategies to interpret cultural information. This thesis points out that escort interpreters play a dual role as linguistic servant and cultural disseminator. The practice of escort interpreting in the2011International Conference on Source Land of Jasmine Tea is cited to further illustrate escort interpreters’ role as cultural disseminator. By exemplification and comparative analysis, this thesis points out that escort interpreters can adopt such strategies as substitution, ellipsis, amplification and explanation in interpreting source information, especially cultural information, so as to promote communication between different cultural groups and facilitate the integration of local culture into global culture. Then a Four-Step Training Pattern is suggested for improving escort interpreting learners’ capacity to interpret cultural information, including multi-theme mock interpretation, assessment of interpreting strategies, collection of cultural information, and construction of cultural knowledge base. Under the guidance of the above pattern, teachers can help escort interpreting learners to internalize interpreting skills and to fully play their role in interpreting.
