Higashiyama Kaii is Japan’s famous landscapist and proser after the World War II, his paintings and prose are not only popular in Japan, but also enjoy a high reputation in the world. Higashiyama Kaii came to China many times for sketching and holding art exhibitions. He had made outstanding contributions to Sino-Japanese art exchange. At present, his art and thought has been concerned by more and more Chinese scholars.This paper will take ’the self in the landscape’ as a point of penetration, and study the art life of Higashiyama Kaii from three aspects-the self-pursuing, self-transformation and self-expression, which is based on carding all essays of Higashiyama Kaii. At the meantime, on the basis of analyzing the text, this paper will analyze his specific characteristics on art and thougt, combined with the modern development of Japanese painting. Then the paper will research his artistic contribution and era significance. Throughout three different stages of his life, he had inseparable relations with the nature. He did significant contributions on the Japanese painting’s modern transformation. Higashiyama Kaii has a certain influence on the development of modern society.
