Taiwan,which is also a Chinese community as mainland China,has a sometime similar but also different development course compared with that of mainland China. On the road of visual innovation and truth seeking, there was a80years development history for Taiwan Documentary from one to many.It changed from mechanical type to rebellion and then to the innovation of documentary modes, from simple to multiple, from myth to reality. The whole process was rich and colorful.The representation fiction of documentary and the inherent logic are the two sides of reality. Compared with the fact that most of mainland China documentaries are official or media ones, in Taiwan, experimental style in aesthetics of the documentaries are the most popular ones. In the long history, Taiwan documentary creators developed experimental aesthetics with wisdom and hardworking. They used expository, observational, interactive, reflexive modes to develope new functions besides the traditional functions such as scientific discovery and narrative story. New functions were rhetoric, persuasion, debate, strategy, view, value, ideology,and poetics. The creators even tried to blur the boundary of fiction and reality. The new born forms gave the film itself lots of benefits. The universal appearance of experimental aesthetics in Taiwan documentaries happens to confirm that experimentalism has the strong ability to build, broke, expand, and rebuild the narrative pattern of documentary.The thesis will center on the most distinct trait of Taiwan documentary, that is experimentalism, use examples to discuss the relationship between experimental and reality, documentary style, experience. The aesthetics and practicable value of experimental documentary will be discussed.
