Since the 1990 's,Taiwan's film industry has been remained distressed.There was a sharp drop in film production,and the cinema was almost dominated by Hollywood films.At the same time,it was not easy for the local films to be released in the cinema and a sharp decline in audience appeared.However,the documentary breakthrough and survived from the dilemma and became a unique existence in Taiwan film industry.Comparing with the ups and downs in commercial film market,Taiwan documentary's stable production saved Taiwan's filmmakers in the most depressed years.Now,documentaries have become an important genre in the cinemas.This thesis primarily starts from the popularity of documentary,then it explores the innovations the documentary brings and the dilemmas it faces through the study of the development of Taiwan's cinema documentary.Taiwan documentary's flourish cannot be accomplished in one stroke.From the development of Taiwan's documentary,the function of documentary has been changed from strengthening political ideology to opposing the mainstream media and caring for the disadvantaged with the popularization of technical means and abolishment of martial law.Due to predecessor's hard work in producing documentary and the open and inclusive social atmosphere in Taiwan,Taiwan's society attaches great importance to the development of documentary industry.In 1997,the first Taiwan's cinema documentary was released,which started documentary's journey in cinemas.In 2004,the Gift of Life entered people's horizon through the successful commercial marketing strategies,which let Taiwan sense the potential of documentary in the film market.In 2013,the miracle of Beyond Beauty-Taiwan from Above's box office gave a self-esteem boost for the development of Taiwan's cinemas documentary.During this process,the combination of documentary and commercial management made the power of documentary become more effective.
