This essay is about the musical Aida it studies and analyzes the singing performance and characterization of the heroine Aida, with the image of the character as entry point. The essay includes four parts. Part One is introduction, which outlines the composing background, music, story and music and lyric authors of both the musical and the opera Aida, and the comparison between the fore said two versions. Part Two concerns on the comprehension and analyzation of the character Aida which include two aspects:her characteristics of personality and her choice between love and nation. Part Three analyzes the singing performance with detailed discussion on the sound model. In a play, be it musical, drama, opera or traditional Chinese opera, the characterization is realized through various art performance. I applied sound, language and my understanding of the play in the creation of a vivid character. To capture the development of the character’s heart and mood, one has to perform different sounds, for it is impossible to perform the musical with only one sound. Part Four is the adjusted version of the musical Aida from my Degree Concert, its play script and explanation. For the large scale of the musical Aida, it’s impossible to perform the original play on our stage with the limited post-graduate human resource, so I’ve adapted it. I’ve added narratages in Act3and Act4to explain the plot, in the mean time removed most scenes with crowds, hence to explicit the plotline, and to interpret the musical with better and more accurate characterization.
