The Use Of Bamboo Flute In Music Composition

Works for Chinese traditional orchestra play an increasingly significant role in the field of new music in China nowadays. Close study of various bamboo flutes becomes an urgent task. With development of the bamboo flute in the past couple decades, its techniques, musical styles, and new repertoire were hugely extended and expanded. Different traits evolved during this period, which also developed the capacity of its musical expression. Not only did these developments reveal composers’perspectives about certain timbres, they also displayed certain appropriate, artistic amendments used by composers when they encountered various obstacles. The exploits of different timbres also provided new dimensions to their new compositions. By analyzing several compositions written for Chinese traditional orchestra and sharing my own experience, this paper attempts to present a number of compositional methods for Chinese traditional orchestra, both in the technical and artistic levels.
