Judging from the number of Egyptian amulet found in excavations, one could see thatancient Egyptians at every level of society wore amulets. Amulets of ancient Egypt can notonly protect the living from evil forces and enemy attacking, can also be dedicated to Godsfor Gods’ blessing. In addition, ancient Egyptian amulets can be used as funerary objectssome of which were wrapped in mummy, and some were placed in the coffin, to help thedeceased successfully enter the next world and enjoy peaceful, healthful and prosperouslife there.Abroad, Egyptologists researched on amulets under the category of ancient Egyptianwitchcraft with some of the writings. However domestic scholars have not paid muchattention to this topic with only some books mentioned it. The author of this dissertationwould like to read and translate the Book of the Dead and analyze English literature onancient Egyptian amulets with integrating cultural background. Using of a certain theory ofreligion, the author hopes to find ancient Egyptian amulets’ species, production andefficacy in order to reveal the ancient Egyptian myths, religion, ways of thinking, andaesthetic standards.This paper is divided into six sections:Introduction: a brief overview of the current domestic and international study of ancientEgyptian amulets and related original materials.Part one: definition of modern amulets, and analysis the ancient Egyptian amuletsetymology to reveal that the amulets of ancient Egypt are artistic activities with aestheticideas on the basis of the whole nation in a common religion and strong social utilitarian.Part two: introduction of the cultural background of ancient Egyptian amulets whichborn and evolved, because Egyptian religion is the driving force of artistic and aesthetic.highlight the Book of the Dead which is a kind of important amulet.Part three: discussion the design and classifications of the ancient Egyptian amulets,their shape, color and material are crucial to their meanings in ancient Egyptian opinions.Part four: introduction of common amulets excavated.Part five: Exploring aesthetic standards of ancient Egypt form the Egyptian amulets onthe basis of original thinking and Egyptian religion.Due to the lack of information and the level of restriction, the author is bound to makemistakes and omissions, so that the paper need to be further improved. |
