The traditional Chinese garden embodies profound traditional Chinese culture. Inthe westerners’ eyes, a mysterious veil has been drawn over it for a long time. Inaddition, there is a lack of theoretical academic monographs, which disables theChinese garden from being well known to the world. Analysis of the TraditionalChinese Garden, written by Peng Yigang, offers a scientific interpretation of thetraditional Chinese gardening techniques by taking advantage of western modernspace theories and composition principles. Under the guidance of Newmark’stranslation typology, chapter4to chapter25in the book have been translated,involving the characteristics and gardening approaches of the traditional Chinesegarden. The report boils down to four parts, i.e., project description, translationtypology overview, translation problems and strategies and conclusion. The first partelaborates on the selection process of the original text, its features and the preparationphase. The second part summarizes Newmark’s translation theory. The third partanalyzes5typical problems in detail, touching upon the names of scenic spots withChinese characteristics, technical terms of gardening, relevant ancient classicalChinese books, analytical and declarative language and words boosting tourism.Typical examples have been listed with the corresponding translation strategyprovided. The last part draws a conclusion of the translation project in a systematicmanner and points out the room for improvement. This translation project and reportaim to study the application of Newmark’s translation typology in traditional Chinesegarden and correct some mistranslations regarding the names of scenic spots andtechnical terms. It may be instructive for the translation of traditional Chinese gardenby means of selecting the corresponding translation strategies in accordance withdifferent text types.
