This translation practice is a life insurance contract,entrusted by Henan Huayun Law Office to translate the insurance terms,rights and obligations of the insured and other related contents,with 15067 Chinese characters.The clients require that the final translation should be smooth and faithful to the source text,the terms should be translated accurately and consistently,the sentence structure should be reasonable and the content should be coherent.Guided by Newmark’s text typology theory,the author analyzes the characteristics of the source text in terms of vocabulary,syntax and discourse;under the strategies of semantic and communicative translation,she applies different translation methods to bring off this translation practice.Technically,texts are classified into three types,including informative texts,expressive texts and vocative texts;based on this,the translator identifies the category of the translation practice and analyzes its characteristics.Specifically,the provisions of the Life Insurance Contract are related to the interests of the insured and various situations and accidents,whose main function is to convey various information related to the insurance contract for the proposer;in addition,the contract’s ultimate goal is aimed at signing with the proposer,so it belongs to informative and vocative texts based on the function and translation purpose.From a lexical level,the contract text contains many professional terms in the insurance and legal fields,then the author,by using semantic translation strategies,analyzes terminologies and word choices in detail,and adopts the method of conversion to make the text more in line with the grammatical rules of the target language;from a syntactical level,the author mainly adopts the sequential translation,sentence reorganization and passive voice,while from a textual level,its cohesion and coherence are achieved by analyzing the logical relationship of the context and adding the implied meaning.Newmark’s text typology theory provides the theoretical basis for text analysis,semantic translation for methods during the translation of terminologies and communicative translation for the long and complex sentences,making the text more compatible with the habits of the target language readers and thus achieving the purpose of communication.
