With the emphasis on conveying the spirit of the text, prose is a literary genrewhich is as important as another three literary genres (drama, novel, poetry). Prosetranslation can not only represent the aesthetic value of the source text, but alsopromote the cross-cultural communication.The source text of this translation project is from Xiang Chou Yu Liang Zhi, acollection of prose written by Lin Shaohua, a famous translator and author ofcontemporary China. On the basis of the combination of Lin Yutang’s theory of“Sinogram spirit”, the stylistic features of Chinese prose and some translationexamples, the thesis is mainly to explore and illustrate the author’s own ideas on theethos transfiguration between the source text and the target text, intertextuality andtranslation, and the translation of rhetorical devices. The author proposes that as oneof the significant functions of translation--especially the translation of Chineseprose--is to convey the Sinogram spirit of the source text, the translator should aim forthe ethos transfiguration between the source text and the target text. The thesis is aresearch report on this translation project.This thesis consists of four parts. The first part is to make a brief introduction tothis translation project from two perspectives, the original author and the source text.The second part is to sketch the project progress by providing general informationabout all the four phases of the project. The third part is to conclude the main difficultpoints in translation, to research on them with relative translation theories and specifictranslation examples, and to put forward the points of view of the author andrespective translation strategy and methods. In the first place, after elaborating thetheory of “Sinogram spirit” and stating the characteristics of Chinese prose, the thesisproposes ethos transfiguration. In the second place, aiming at ethos transfiguration,the thesis links intertextuality with translation through explaining intertextuality.According the types, the characteristics and the rhetoric functions of figures ofspeech,the thesis finally discusses the translation of figures of speech with thetranslation of metaphor, personification, parallelism, comparison, rhetorical question,and rhetoric question, focusing on the idea of ethos transfiguration. The fourth part isto come to a conclusion, highlighting the significance of ethos transfiguration in prosetranslation and showing author’s experience and thought in progress of translatingXiang Chou Yu Liang Zhi.
