Emotional Factors Embodied In Translation

Bing Xin is best known as a famous poetess, writer and essayist, but she has also contributed a lot to the cultural exchanges between China and other countries by way of her many translations of foreign literature works. However, her translations have been neglected in the circle of translation studies. Emotional factors belong to the category of psychology. Translation as a cognitive activity involving the human being surely can not be separated from emotional factors.This thesis makes a case study of Bing Xin’s version of Tagore’s Gitanjali, associating with the characteristics of emotional input in translation, to analyze their embodiments in translating activity from the point of view of translator’s emotion and utilizes the classification methods in second language acquisition and classifies the emotional factors into two categorizes, one is the individual factor of the translator including the attitude, motivation and inspiration etc; the other is the emotional factors between the translator and the author and the reader, including the cultural awareness and empathy. This thesis combining the characteristic of the original work, gives an emphasis on motivation and empathy in emotional factors, as well as the inspiration closely related to emotion to show that emotional factors embodied in Bing Xin’s translation bring the brilliant rays and to reveal Bing Xin’s status as a great translator.The thesis consists of five chapters. Chapter one introduces the necessity of the study and gives an overview of the work Gitanjali and Bing Xin’s version. Chapter two is literature review. It states the developments of the translator’s subjectivity and the current study of emotional factors. Chapter three is an overview of emotional factors. Chapter four, acting as the main part of the thesis, analyzes the emotional factors embodied in Bing Xin’s translation of Gitanjali from different angles stating the positive effects of the emotional factors in her translation and the deficiency caused by lacking of emotion. Chapter five gives the thesis a close.
