The Hong Kong Ci-poet Albert Lin is famous for his excellent lyric works,which are popular in the Chinese area. Among those works, the style of consciousnessstream lyrics are the most outstanding ones. Based on discourse linguistics theory,cognitive linguistics theory and sociolinguistic theory, This dissertation researchesLin’s style of consciousness stream lyrics in detail.The foreword part of this article reviews William James’ consciousness streamtheory, including its concept, feature, and content, then defines the concept of streamof consciousness text, and conducts a retrospective survey on related articles from theview of literature and linguistic etc. It makes sure that Lin’s consciousness style lyricsworks are the branch of oriental consciousness literature. The second chapter givesthe conception of style of consciousness stream lyrics, classifies the corpus andenumerates the related examples. The third chapter analyzes the lyrics by the theoryof text cohesion including lexical cohesion, reference cohesion, and specificsentence pattern cohesion. By these cohesion methods, it shows the continuous andvariable stream of consciousness, and also weakens the illogicality of consciousnessstream, which makes the lyric language more understandable. The fourth chapterdiscusses the coherence of this style lyric from the aspect of psychological cognition.This chapter depends on the iconicity theory, conceptual metaphor theory and thesubjectivity of Chinese language to analyze the text coherence. By its iconicityfunction, stream of consciousness text is more likely to get its coherence. Meanwhile,the strong subjectivity generated by the stream of consciousness text contributes to thetext coherence. In addition, conceptual metaphor constructs the whole text effectively,and describes the flowing consciousness vividly. The fifth chapter mainly researchesthe phenomenon that Lin’s lyrics are warmly welcomed by fans. In conclusion, thereare three factors: firstly the sincere sentiments delivered by the lyrics are easilyaccepted by the listeners, Faye Wong as an excellent singer grasps a appropriate wayto express the connotation of these lyrics; what’s more, the lyrics themselves show agreat profundity and implicate philosophy ideas which makes them surpass theordinary pop song lyrics.
