An Analysis Of Chinese Female Translators And Their Translations During The May4^th Period From The Perspective Of The Feminist Translation Theory

Translation study, as a relatively new academic research field, has beendeveloping rapidly in recent years. Combined with other disciplines, translationstudies show its prosperous aspects. The present study will look at the translationprogress with a perspective of gender study.May4^thmovement is a very important milestone in Chinese revolutionaryhistory. When the Nation was in peril, people with lofty ideals tried to save thecountry and the people. Translations played an important role reforming people’s oldminds. The introduction of the western advanced culture focused primarily onnatural science, but it had a profound impact on Chinese ideological and valuesystems. Domestic situation, the influence of western advanced culture and the NewCulture Movement in the ideological and cultural fields, changes promoted theindividuality liberation and people’s liberation. The intellectuals translated westernliterature, political science and science, which had become spiritual inspirations.Translation could be somewhat recognized from the margin of the location to a centralposition for the first time.Women’s voices for liberation was heard for the first time in the New CultureMovement, which emphasized humanism, Women’s fate and the nation’s historywere closely connected. A large number of women writers and translators emerged inthe history. They described women’s fate from the female self-consciousnessperspective. At the same time, the emerging women translators displayed a number ofoutstanding translation works. Unfortunately, their translations were paid littleattention to by scholars. Recent years, with the study of feminism arising in ourcountry, women translators have aroused attention.In the thesis, the author used feminist translation theory to analyze femaletranslators and their translations through and to discuss their position and role in thehistory of translation. Most female translators not only write but also translate during the May4^thperiod. Their literary works are filled with distinctive women’sconsciousness. Their translations may not show the same characteristics as those intheir works according to the feminist translation theory. Lin Huiyin’s translationsserve as good examples to explain the status. Bing Xin’s translations have thesimilar feature as her literary works. Whether for the language style or for the theme,the translations embody her feminism standpoints. Combining the analysis ofhistorical records and their translated works, the study will hopefully provideempirical references for the feminist translation theory in translation studies.
