Illustration, regarded as a pivotal component part of the elementary Chinesecomprehensive textbook, not only aims to activate the textbook itself but also toarouse and cultivate the students’ learning interest. In addition, it is illustration that isexpected to help foreign learners of Chinese to surmount the obstacles of languageand to get a rapid acknowledgment of the related information in a comparativelyvisualized way. A unified standard of textbook illustrations is still under discussiontoday within the industry; nevertheless, there exist various of problems in theelementary Chinese textbooks both in quality and in quantity. In that case, thecontinuously persuasion of high-level illustrations is out of our dream withoutquestion. So the biggest concern at the prevent stage will be the practical way of usingand producing textbook illustrations. That is to say, we need to focus on the teachingreality especially in illustration and to strengthen the concept of illustration selectionand utilization, in order to make out more and more textbooks based on the majorityusers’ requirements accommodate to teaching demand.Therefore, based on that, the author has chosen three elementary Chinesecomprehensive textbooks in order to further the study. To begin with this thesis, theauthor sums up and analysis the features of the illustration selection in those threetextbooks,and then followed by the investigation in both teachers and foreignstudents about the utilization of illustrations chosen. The suggestions aboutillustrations in textbooks at present stage, which is totally rooted in the investigationstatistics, serve as the last part of the thesis. In this thesis, the author is trying to find abetter way to illustrate the textbooks which will meets more users’ requirements andfits the teaching reality through comparison and investigation.
