Intertextuality is originally a field of literature, but at the very beginning, it resolve all the fields’problems. Later, it is confined to literary reception, namely reading and writing. Nowadays, its field isgetting narrower and narrower and returns to the field of literature, limited in rhetoric. Many scholarsdevote to its research. Some devote to the study of literary reception between two cultures namely the fieldof translation studies. Reading and writing also exist in translation and intertextuality in translation is morespecial. Few scholars practically touch that field. The earliest are Hatim and Mason, but they don’t touchupon E-C translation. This research is just established to discuss the practical translation problems ofallusions from the perspective of intertextuality in literary reception namely E-C transltion between twodifferent cultures. The thesis aims to find how intertextuality is transplanted to the E-C translation field, and how intertextuality translation theory is used in the practice of E-C allusion translation. The thesis alsogives tentative solutions to the problems of allusion translation in the perspective of translationintertextuality, namely tracing the origins of allusions. The selection of allusions is from the Englisharticles in the competition of Han Suyin Youth Award for Translation, concentrating on the study of E-Ctranslation by Chinese experts. It makes a comparison between the translation lacking in the direction ofthe translation intertextuality theory and the translation making use of it, trying to offer the readers achance to realize the difference between them. The thesis concludes with a psychological theory: Gestaltpsychology, explaining partly the solutions to the problem of culture-loaded items’ translation. The thesisalso gives the definition of translation intertextuality according to former researchers’ studies both inintertextuality and Gestalt, aiming to complement the shortage of practice in the field of intertextualtranslation. The process of intertextuality’s applying to translation is like this: the translators use theircultural schema, namely their own cultural impressions on their brains to analyze the allusion from itscontext, namely the source culture of the allusion. When applying the Gestalt theory, the translator’s task isto find the universally accepted rendering of both cultures. The translation not only represents what thewesterners behave and express, namely their outlook, but also embodies the outlook of the translatorsthemselves. The translation is directed to the readers, so translators must be responsible for their translation,or they will harm the younger generation.
