Analysis Of The Contradiction Art In Liu Xinglong "Skywalker"

Liu Xinglong’s novel Skywalker”, is not only an extension of his previous novellaThe Phoenix Zither”, but a deeper depiction and analysis of the local teachers living atthe bottom of the social hierarchy. Focusing on the main story line as well as the branchlines of the conflict in the novel’s structure, this paper intends to show how the story iswoven skillfully with the conflicts and the artistic methods demonstrated in the depictionof the characters in the novel. The main story line which runs through the whole novel isformed by the various conflicts faced by the main characters in Jieling. The paper willfocus on three aspects of the novel, i.e., the conflict between individual with the exteriorenvironment, men’s conflict with others as well as the inner struggles within the characters.As for the first aspect, the author portrays characters set in extremely tough naturalsurroundings, poor economic conditions and tyrannical social conditions and depictstypical characters in typical environment by capturing the struggles between men andouter environment. The second aspect featuring men versus other individuals presents theconflicts between the new generation and old generation and the process of the melting ofthe conflicts, making the characters rounder and more real. The last aspect deals with thesubtle and complicated psychological changes of the main characters’ different attitudestowards the same subject to bring out the complexity of the characters’ personalities. Inthe last part, this paper analyzes the arrangement of the branch lines of the conflicts in thenovel, that is, the conflicts in the emotional world of the main figures, in an attempt tohighlight the author’s remarkable skills shown in the characterization with the conflicts inthe novel.
