Liang Qichao’s novel theory and his works, once a big breakout and innovation, hadexerted a profound influence on literary of the later ages. Confronted with the severe practicalcrisis prevailing in China, Liang tried to arouse his fellows’ belief and confidence on nationalsalvation and ethnic conservation by introducing Japanese political novels with thecharacteristic of tremendous social and political functions, a utilitarian purpose that lay thefoundation of his novel theory that featuring salvation and new people. However, Liang alsorealized that should the readers of his novels be moved, his works must be written on theprecondition of aesthetic appreciation, which means aesthetic appreciation and utilitarianpurposes were not totally contradicted. With his personal efforts, Liang’s dual-value on thetwo above-mentioned aspects of a novel played an important role in helping Chinese novelsmove from ancient to modern, which was a good embody of the hyper-sensibility of his noveltheory.
