Ezra Pound is not only a famous American poet of20century, but also a leader ofImagism. As a poet of new poetry in the West, Pound’s Imagism reflects both in his poeticsand his image translation of Chinese poems. Whether in his creation of poems or histranslations, Pound attaches great importance to “image”. For Pound, it is very important toretain the images in poem translation. So this paper centers on Pound’s Imagism and imagetranslation, taking inherent image relation between Pound and Chinese poem, concretetranslation ways as key points. Besides, some examples are employed to analyze Pound’simage presentation. The paper firstly introduces Pound and T.E.Hulme’s poetic image theories and basicprinciples of Imagism. Comparing Pound’s poetic Imagism with Hulme’s, the authorexpounds Pound’s poetic system, and makes clear what leads to his translation of Chineseclassical poems. Secondly, this paper elaborates on the close contact between Pound and theChinese poems. It explains systemically why Pound is interested in “beauty of artisticconception” and “beauty of harmony” which implied in Chinese poems. And some examplesare used to illustrate Pound’s multiple perspectives, and expound his distinctive“LuminousDetail” theory&“Ideogrammic”theory. Thirdly Pound’s CATHAY is chosen as a study objectto discuss concretely Pound’s image translation ways, such as Chinese traditional“juxtaposition”, associative recall of the key words, changing poetic structure and using his“Personae”. The end part summarizes Pound’s image translation influence, and explains whyPound’s translation is popular both in the East and the West. The research shows that Pound’s image translation not only can provide some effectivetranslation examples for culture communication, but also can improve our aesthetic vision oftranslated poems.
