The epitaph of He Hongjing came out of the mixture of society, culture and calligraphyInflenced by regionalism of Daming in Tang dynasty. Outstanding achivements of themaster of the tomb He Hongjing, inspiring words of the epitaph writer Lu Gao, as well aswonderful calligraphy of the sculptor Wu Pan make possible the best ever epitaph in China.This epitaph creates an atmosphere of plainess and quietness, the calligraphy beingpowerfull and flexible, the composition being throughly understanding, the structure beingnatural and the shape being vast yet delicate, all of these creats an art style of upright, leanlypowerful and ventage. In terms of style of calligraphy, this epitaph not only takes after thedignity of tomb in Wei dynasty, but also takes in the spirit of regular script in early Tangdynasty, based on which it develops creativity, showing the appreciation pursuit of moderateand ventage and the unique charm of calligraphy belonging to He Hongjing epitaph only. Itprovides crucial reference for study of epitaph in late Tand dynasty for people. What’s more,it has a profound influence on the features of later calligraphy. No wonder it is culture relicof national treasure level.
