This paper is to carry out a study on the regional literature of the Northern Dynasty in a hope of properly positioning its literature status in the history of Chinese literature. In the process of carrying out this study, five factors are considered. They are as follows:the distribution and number of scholars of that time, the formation and transition of the literary activity center, the directions in which scholars flowed, locations and information of literary families as well as its regional literature status in the course of history. With all these efforts, this paper endeavors, in a reasonable way, to give a comprehensive portrayal of literature.of the Northern DynastyAccording to the research on the distribution and number of scholars of the Northern Dynasty, this paper, based on the Volume of Pre-Qin, Wei,Jin,Southern and Northern Dynasties of Chinese Scholars Dictionary compiled by Mr Cao Daoheng, roughly sorts out, with a graphic, the distribution of scholars whose native places are traceable. On this account, the information of literature center of that time will be accessible. What’s more, the most, moderately as well as least developed regions in terms of literature prosperity can be traced and distinguished. Then, the literary center can be detected with the number of the scholars at hand.The Second chapter will focus on the formation and transition of literary center of the Northern Dynasty. There are mainly four literary centers of that age:Pingcheng, Luoyang, Yecheng and Changan. In this chapter, two aspects are taken to expound respectively on these literary centers. First, the policies literary centers adopted to promote its literature. Second, the cultural activities among various literary activities. In the mean time, studies on the transition of literary centers are also included. Finally, the conclusion part of this chapter will present different features of these literary centers.The Third chapter will making an effort to portrait a panorama of regional literature of the Northern Dynasty based on the clue of the flows of scholars. This chapter is designed to develop itself from three kinds of scholars’ flow to further enrich the studies of the regional literature of the Northern Dynasty. The three kinds are:migrant scholars, missionary scholars and native scholars. Then this part will continue to elaborate the impact that scholars’ flow had on the developent of regional literature.Forth, due to the significant status that literary families had in the Northern Dynasty, this paper particularly separate a part to give a full elaboration on the geological distribution of these families. Meanwhile, this part will move a step further to evaluate the specific impact that these literary families had on the regional literature of the Northern Dynasty as well as to make a summary on regional features of different literary families in different regionsFinally, considering the different era and regional characteristics in the regional literature of the Northern Dynasty, this paper endeavors to fix the position for the following regional literatures in the history of China’s Regional literature. Two perspectives will be adopted to define the the status of the regional literature of the Northern Dynasty. The one is time and space, the other national literature.
