Translation Report Of API Certification Programs Application

This is an English-Chinese translation report for an application of American Petroleum Institute. The application is used to apply for API Monogram Program, API Quality Registrar, API Spec Q1, ISO/TS, and29001API Quality, etc. The text belongs to scientific translation in non-literary translation of petroleum technology. The version was authorized by the employer where I carried out my practice while it has played an important role during the translation. The employer brings out strict requirements towards corresponding of original version and translated version, as well as specific demands for the translation of some words and the whole translation should be accuracy and smooth.Standard specifications, instructions and agreements are included in the original text; consequently, the source text features rigorousness and strictness. In addition, the original text involves contents of how to choose certification programs, how to submit application and applicant information. Therefore, when translating, it requires translator not only to pay attention to accuracy, objectivity, but also to attach importance to logic, rigor, coherence and simplicity. The source text is an informative one. Guided by the text type theory of Newmark, semantic translation is mainly applied in the translating process in order to translate the text properly. Semantic translation and communicative translation are combined in translating Applicant Agreement and structures of the language are adjusted as necessary to ensure the accuracy of the contents, meanwhile target readers understand their rights and obligations clearly.This report is divided into four chapters:The first chapter is the introduction of the source text, including the content, nature, purpose, meaning and analyzing of readers of the version; The second chapter examines the characteristics of the source text and the translation methods adopted during the translating process. In this chapter, the type of the text and the application of semantic translation and communicative translation are to be discussed; The third chapter probes into the translating difficulties in the translation of words, Applicant Agreement, terminology and the influence of culture differences and their coping strategies; The last part is a summary of the translation practice; the advantages of paralleled versions, the influence of powers of agents in translation and specialization of translation is discussed in this chapter.
