As a result of China’s rapid economic development and increased participation in the global oil industry, the demand for the English translation of Petroleum text has increased. Therefore,it is crucial to guarantee the accuracy of translations of texts utilized in the oil business. The source text is taken from the second chapter of Petroleum Science and Technology, which was published by Chemical Rubber Company Press in 2021 and written by Muhammad Abdul Quddus.Additionally, chapter two aims to introduce how oil came into being. It is found that terminology and long and compound sentences are used frequently in the text. And this type of text is characterized by professional expression and rigorous logic.Guided by the theory of functional equivalence, this report analyzes the problems encountered in translation and explores the corresponding translation methods from three aspects: vocabulary, syntax, and discourse. At the lexical level, contextual analysis and conversion are adopted to translate terminology and polysemy. At the syntactic level, the long, complex sentences are treated flexibly by amplification, omission, reconstruction, voice transformation, and other techniques to achieve syntactic equivalence. At the textual level, logical relationship explicitation is utilized to connect the discourse and improve the coherence of the translation. In addition to offering some references for the translation of similar texts,it is hoped that this report will further enrich the application of functional equivalence theory to the translation of petroleum texts.
