The report elaborates and analyzes the methodological selection in the translation of the novel "Bones and Flash" on the basis of enumerating its translation difficulties caused by metalinguistic characteristics. The novel is a contemporary American detective novel which is featured by colloquial, humorous, and concise language embodying affluent western culture and background knowledge, so the translator should not only transmit its culture but also give consideration to the acceptability of the target language readers. English and Chinese differs from each other in geography, customs, religion, and ways of thinking. Many difficulties in the translation are also derived from the differences of cultural background. A particular cultural concept in the source language may be difficult to comprehend or translate in another language and culture, on account of which a completely equivalent expression could not be found in the target language. In such cases the translator needs to comprehend a particular thing in its culture and make appropriate transformation in the language form and cultural connotation, striving to unearth approximately equivalent expression in the target language or to append supplement and annotation so as to realize the transmission of original message and information. Therefore, the culture behind language occupies a more significant position in translation than language itself. Translation cannot be just mechanically one-to-one correspondence but should be an in-depth communication between two cultures. English rhetoric and slang has a long history, in order to effectively and faithfully convey the information of the original translators must flexibly and moderately exert subjective initiative to overcome the translation obstacles caused by cultural differences. With specific examples from the translation of "Bones and Flash", this paper expounds that translators can create a faithful, fluent and natural translation by returning to the semantic layer, transforming image and breaking through the original language form.
