One Hundred Years of Solitude, written by Garcia Marquez, who epitomized magic realism, has made unique contribution to the world literature, and has profound influence on the awakening of Chinese literaturein the late20th century. Based on a systematic summary and analysis of previous research findings, this thesis takes its perspective from the poetics and techniques of magic realism to gain more comprehensive and deeper insights into the characteristics of magic realism in One Hundred Years of Solitude. In the meantime, it aims to get a better understanding of the philosophy and techniques of literary writing embodied in One Hundred Years of Solitude and make new attempts in the inter-disciplinary study of literary texts, drawing on the theories and approaches of inter-disciplinary study in comparative literature. In the process of doing so, the thesis attaches equal importance to both theoretical interpretation and text analysis and tries to achieve the dialectical unity between macroscopy and microscopy, by shifting its critical focus onto the literary work itself. This thesis consists of four parts. The introduction discusses the formation of Marquez’s literary outlook by referring to his biography and writing career. It also discusses the accomplishments and problems in the previous studies on One Hundred Years of Solitude made by Chinese scholars. Chapter two studies the magic poetics of One Hundred Years of Solitude from the perspective of Marquez’s philosophy of literary writing, focusing on three aspects:mythical thinking, the narrative of death and multiculturalism. Through the horizontal analysis of the philosophy of literary writing, the author finds the longitudinal internal logical structure and relationship, i.e. the inheritance of modernism and reflections of the characteristics of post-modernism in the fiction. In chapter two, the author explores the magic tone in One Hundred Years of Solitude from the angle of writing techniques through a detailed analysis of the text from the following four aspects: techniques of handling time and space, the use of symbols, the benefits from Baroque literature and the influence form the visual representation techniques of movies, so as to offer a better understanding of the magical characteristics of the work. In the concluding part, the author points out that One Hundred Years of Solitude represents a strange but complete artistic world. As the representative of magic realism at its height, it not only fully demonstrates the characteristics of magical realism in its writing philosophy and techniques, but also upsets the traditional concept of literature and changes the writing techniques of world literature dramatically. Further in-depth studies on One Hundred Years of Solitude would bear much significance and value to the development of Chinese literature.
