Late Tang Dynasty was a period where Tang Dynasty fell into decay gradually.Poets living in the ifnal period of an era were unfortunate and sad. When they failedthe imperial examinations, feeling hopeless, when they struggled in their oiffcialcareer, feeling exhausted, and when they suffered mental distress, feeling depressed, they had to consider how to escape from these kinds of anguish. At this time, thetranquility of night soothed their state of mind temporarily and allowed them toindulge their grief and helplessness without distractions. It could be said that nightcarried the sorrow of men of letters. This thesis consists of ifve chapters. The ifrst chapter mainly introduces theresearch background and research method of this paper. In the ifrst section of ChapterTwo, the author makes a simple exposition of “Night Poetr"y according to her own“understanding. The Night Poetr"y, belonging to the category of classical Chinesepoetry, is a literary genre related to night, which basically can be divided into thescope of poetry aesthetics. The second section makes a brief exposition of the conceptand development of “imager”y which is a signiifcant knowledge point of Chineseancient literary theor and which enriches the thoughts of “form” and “meaning”yentailed in the theory of Chinese classical aesthetics. Chinese scholars cannot writearticles or poets without “imager”y.The ifrst section of Chapter Three introduces the historical background of LateTang Dynasty. The second section counts the images occurring in the “Night Poetr"y.And combining the statistical results, Section Two analyzes how these images areselected and composed. This section focuses on revealing how “Night Poetr"y worksas a symbol of Late Tang Dynasty and analyzes the emotional tendency contained inthe poetry as well as the artistic characteristics used by the “imager”y.Chapter Four and Chapter Five separately make a speciifc analysis of theaesthetic artistic conception and the emotional connotation contained in the “NightPoetr"y of Late Tang Dynasty. Dividing the aesthetic artistic conception into threecategories: miserable and bitter cold, calm and peaceful, gloomy and mysterious, thefo”“urth chapter analyses them respectively, focusing on such images as “rain, windand rain”““”,the moon”,clepsydra“,stars”“,candles” and “windows”. The fifthchapter analyses the emotional connotation, which, in this thesis, is divided into four categories: the pursuit of relieving pain, the longing for home and stability, the feelingof sorrow derived from poverty, sickness, oldness and weakness, the beauty ofmelancholy due to bleak life. This chapter focuses on s”“uch images as “bells, lamps”,“firelfies”“,doors”“”“”,the calling apes”“,grass, instruments and the poetsthemselves. From the small images, we can catch a glimpse of the grief and helplessness ofscholars living in the Late Tang Dynasty. In terms of the poems in this period, thepoetry styles tend to be lforid but insubstantial or indifferent, and the artisticconception tends to be more delicate. The magniifcent poetry styles have been goneand the rest are mainly some poems of elegant but weak style, which is especially thecase in “Night Poetr"“y. From the analysis of Night Poetry Imager"y in the Late TangDynasty, we can see the deep and pathetic poetic style and the helpless and reclusivementality of scholars living in the ifnal period of an era.
