On C-E Translation From Parataxis To Hypotaxis

The annual government work report (GWR for short) is the work conclusion and plan delivered by Chinese government to the people’s representatives. The conclusion is the new achievement of social and economic affairs and the plan is the main policy in the next year. Meanwhile, it is also considered as the most authoritative and important source for the foreign countries to know about China. Compared with the significance of GWR, studies of the translation of it from the theoretical perspective are far from satisfactory. Herein, this thesis makes a tentative study of the2012GWR from the view of parataxis and hypotaxis so as to offer some guidance to Chinese to English (C-E) translation.The thesis mainly contains four parts. Chapter One is the literature review which first introduces the current situation of GWR translation which gives much enlightenment for the author to select the research perspective. The second section concerns about the research situation of parataxis and hypotaxis and their general manifestations at different linguistic levels which lays a theoretical foundation for further analysis of the paratactic features in the Chinese version of the2012GWR.Chapter Two gives a detail description of the paratactic features in the Chinese version of the2012GWR at lexical, syntactic and textual levels. What need to be mentioned is that there is still no unified opinion about the paratactic features in Chinese among scholars. Chapter Three introduces the main translation methods and strategies to make successful transference of parataxis to hypotaxis at the three different levels. On the other hand, it is also an alternative choice to retain the original paratactic or hypotaxical features to better serve pragmatic needs.Chapter Four is the enlightenment to translation practice. The methods of transference of parataxis to hypotaxis analyzed in the thesis can be generally applied to translate other texts.The conclusion part concerns about the research findings, research limitations and future suggestions.
