Strengthen the occupational English ability of Vocational College is the key to vocational education, an important task of education reform in Higher Vocational education. Generally speaking, Public English has been a basic course, the content is usually nothing to do with students’profession, furthermore, due to the short study term and various English tests in voacational schools, more time is given to the training on examination when teachers facing the dual tasks of normal teaching and developing "occupational skill". Thus, the examination-oriented teaching leads to the ignorance of training students’ occupational language ability, this is the opposite to the guideline of Higher Vocational Education,which is "to improve the students’ occupational ability". Most of higher vocational colleges does not offer professional English course, students lack the sense of career English, the students cannot fully meet the employers’ demands. Therefore, taking voactional education as a background, training students’ occupational skill in public English class is currently a hot research in Vocational College English teaching. This research mainly discusses how the public English Teaching in Higher Vocational Colleges link up with professional English, and to further realize students’ career development.In this paper, the existing problems and the causing reasons on the occupational ability training in Public English Teaching in Higher Vocational college are investigated based on the surveys of present occupational ability training stuation in Jiangxi Vocational College of Finance and Economics and employers’ demand on related occupational abilities. The existing problems of English teaching in higher vocational college are as follows:teaching orientation did not reflect the occupational ability goal, teaching content are lack of occupational character, teaching methods failed to meet the demand of occupational ability, teaching process is not student-centered, teaching evaluation did not promote the students’occupational ability. The reason for these issues are not only teachers’ teaching ideas, teaching habits and teaching competence,but also the specificity of vocational students and educational environment etc.. The paper finally puts forward the ways of reform in Higher Vocational college’s English teaching from the perspective of occupational ability training mode, firstly, establish ability-oriented and "multi modular"teaching mode in Higher Vocational college, secondly, reform college English teaching methods, construct evaluation system based on ability training, and adjust the role of public English teachers in Higher Vocational education.
