With increasingly frequent exchanges of science and technology between China and the rest of the world, the translation of scientific documents is becoming a business type in the field of translation. Its elaborate and rigid style, accurate conception and strong logic make the quality of the translation of such writings a prerequisite of correct understanding from the perspective of readers. This report discussed the project of the English-Chinese translation of UFO Headquarters. The project is carried out under the guidance of my tutor and has two clear purposes. Firstly, through a thorough analysis of the translation course, we can grasp the process in details. Secondly, through case studies, we can get a deeper understanding of the features of the EST translation and an adept application of the skills of EST translation, which will lay a solid foundation for the future translation tasks. The author revealed the goals of the translation task by detecting the functions and expected features of the target text; and designs translation procedures according to the characteristics of such project. In the process, great attention was given to the differences between Chinese and English and the features of EST. Translation skills such as supplementation omission and conversion of word classes were applied with a view to making the translated text more fluent and better able to serve the demand of Chinese readers. As was shown in the report, a translator should have a comprehensive understanding of translation as an interlingua and intercultural communication process involving multiple parties, pay great attention to the organization work and monitor every aspect of the project, so as to accomplish the task with high standards by taking a comprehensive view of the functions and targets of translation, the representation of the original and the satisfaction of readers’expectations. It was sincerely hoped that this report might offer some referential value for the translation of similar documents.
