The name of "no bone painting" comes from Xu Chongsi, a flower-and-bird painter in North Song dynasty. The outstanding flower-and-bird painter, Sun Long, in Early Ming dynasty, inherited and developed the peculiarity called "drawing without ink" from Xu Chongsi, combined calligraphy’s brushwork, expanded its painting techniques, enriched the expressive force of "boneless", and developed the predecessors’no bone flower-and-bird painting. We study the art characteristics of Sun Long’s work, to reflect China’s "not bone flower-and-bird painting" artistic characteristics, which helps us to clarify the unique charm and worth of it. This graduation thesis attempts to take the characteristics and development of no bone flower-and-bird paintings in different periods as the pointcut to discuss Sun Long’s artistic style and characteristic. Finally, combined with the work of the same period with him as well as contemporary artists, we contrasted analysis Sun Long’s application and innovation in flower and-bird painting of different age. His paintings reflected the flower-and-bird painting characteristics of Ming dynasty. It not only inherited the artistic charm of Song and Yuan dynasties but also retained its unique innovation. His work was designed to highlight personality interest, and emphasize pen and ink interest, with pursuing the lively artistic conception and formal beauty of artistic conception. It combined gorgeous trait of royal painting and the freeness in Chinese ink painting. He made great impact on Ming dynasty and later generations of artists, as well as made a great contribution in the Chinese flower-and-bird painting field.
