| Professor Guo Jianzhong was not only a senior professor at College of Foreign Languages in Zhejiang University for years, but also a distinguished translator having been enjoying great reputation in SF translation both at home and abroad. In1991, He was honored with World SF Karel Award for Excellence in SF Translation by the International SF Association of Professionals. He was the first Chinese to receive this award. In1997, he was granted Golden Bridge Award of SF Translation at Beijing International SF Convention.As a translator, on the one hand, Professor Guo concentrated on translation practice, providing Chinese readers with10translated works, including science fictions, and popular science writings. His representative rendered works are Deer Slayer(《杀鹿人》),Iron Weed(《铁草》),and Naked Sun(《赤裸的太阳》),of which The Listeners (《茫茫太空寻知音》) is the most famous. He, also together with James Gunn, the master of American SF, edited The Road to SF(《科幻之路》)(6volumes with over3million words) which covers history, comments and works, and is regarded as the treasure of SF.On the other hand, in addition to translation practice, he also has made a great contribution to translation theories as well. His representative works are Translation: Theories, Practice and Teaching《翻译：理论、实践与教学》(2010)；The Translation of Popular Science and Science Fiction:Theories, Techniques and Practice《科普与科幻翻译：理论、技巧与实践》(2004), which is the first pioneering monograph in science literature, marks the rise of the systematic study of science literature translation, and makes a further contribution to the SF translation theories and practice as well.However, up to now, little research has been done on him. Guo Jianzhong and his SF translation are not attached great importance to, and it is the very motivation and reason why the author initiates this thesis.Integrating general study with case study, the present paper generally adopts two methods:descriptive translation studies (DTS) and textual analysis. It tries to analyze Guo’s thoughts and practice of SF translation, passing objective judgment on his SF translation in order to absorb essence from his SF translation thoughts and translation practice. Chapter one begins with the significance of the study, background of the study, methodology of the study, and structure of the thesis. Chapter Two looks back on Guo Jianzhong’s SF translation and its significance in Chinese society. Besides, it also reviews the previous general study of Guo Jianzhong as a translator and specific research on Guo’s SF translation. Chapter Three points out the motivation of Guo Jianzhong’s selection of foreign SF works for translation, especially elaborates on the development and influence of foreign SF owing to "Golden Age" and Emerging of New Wave Movement, the situation of China’s society at that time, and Guo’s own subjective factors such as his interest and purpose in the selection. Chapter Four discusses Gou’s thoughts on SF translation. It mainly includes Guo’s new concepts on SF translation methods, equivalence as Guo’s guideline in SF translation, as well as Guo’s criteria for SF translation. Moreover, it also talks about five requirements for translators in SF translation according to the SF characteristics. Chapter Five deals with the analytical study of Guo’s SF translation practice of The Listeners based on his new concepts and equivalence. And the priority is given to the discussion on the equivalence in SF translation. Chapter Six is the conclusion of this thesis, analyzing the major findings, limitations and suggestions for further studies. |
