On The C-E Translation Of Culture-loaded Expressions In News From The Perspective Of Functionalist Approaches

Nowadays, the international economic and cultural exchanges are growing more and more frequent. News reporting becomes one of the important channels for international communication. With the development of China’s economy, more and more foreigners pay close attention to the news reports about China. News reports are characterized by the large amount usage of culture-loaded expressions. The translation of culture-loaded expressions directly affects the effect of cross-cultural communication.At present, there have been many studies on the translation of news and culture-loaded expressions. Studies on news translation mainly center on news title, leads, neologism or take different kinds of news as the study objects, such as, soft news, political news, sports news. Studies on the translation of culture-loaded expressions are mainly discussed in literary works. Studies on the translation of culture-loaded expressions in news are relatively small in amount. Therefore, it is still necessary to have further studies on culture-loaded expressions in news under the guidance of systematic translation theories.Functionalist School is one of the most influential translation schools in the world. Functionalist approaches stress the decisive role of translation skopos in the translational action and attach importance to text types, functions and other factors involved in the translational action. This thesis consists of six parts. The introduction part gives an account of the research background, literature review, data collection and the structure of the thesis. The first chapter introduces functionalist approaches. Based on the definitions and characteristics of news translation and culture-loaded expressions, the second chapter and the third chapter briefly deal with the translation strategies and methods of culture-loaded expressions in news from the perspective of functionalist approaches. The fourth chapter takes the national English weekly Beijing Review as the case to analyze the translation of culture-loaded expressions from the perspective of functionalist approaches, discusses some factors involved in translational action, including skopos, text functions, target readers, etc., provides some practical translation methods and discuses their effects according to the analysis. The conclusion summarizes the whole thesis, points out some limitations of the study and makes suggestions for further researches.The purpose of this thesis is to illustrate the decisive role of translation skopos in the translation of culture-loaded expressions in news and to justify the guidance of functionalist approaches. It is hoped that this thesis may be helpful for the news translators in the practice of news translation The academic value of the thesis lies in that the thesis justifies the practical guidance of functionalist approaches to the translation of culture-loaded expressions in news and provides some practical methods for translators by analyzing the translation skopos, text types, functions and the methods of culture-loaded expressions translation in the key national publicity journal Beijing Review.
