News adaptation has played a very important role in meeting people's demand for more information in this era. Involving both editing and translating processes, news adaptation, as a form of translation, can surely benefit from certain translation theories. However, more and more studies have revealed the demerits of traditional linguistics-based translation theories. The appearance of the functionalist translation theory has provided a new perspective for translation studies. This thesis explores the process of news adaptation from the perspective of the functionalist translation theory. The functionalist translation theory was initiated by some German scholars in the 1970s, including the Text Typology Theory of Katharina Reiss, the Skopostheorie of Hans Vermeer, Theory of Translation Action of Justa Holz-M?ntt?ri and Function plus Loyalty Theory of Christiane Nord. And the main idea of this approach is to treat translation as a purposeful activity. In this thesis, the author reviews the development of the functionalist translation and the situation of its studies and application both at home and abroad and then analyzes the necessity and possibility of applying this theory to news adaptation. Finally, centering on the process of news adaptation, this thesis discusses the role of this theory, particularly the Skopostheorie, in directing the news adaptation practice from perspectives of news text, translation brief, adaptation methods and principles for news adaptation.
