On C-E Translation Of Negative Theme News From The Perspective Of Functionalist Approaches

Functionalist approaches have been fruitfully applied to news translation. As one kind ofnews, negative theme news translation provides a platform for people all over the world toknow more about the real circumstance of China. However, little research has focused on theapplication of functionalist approaches to negative theme news.In the thesis,190texts of C-E negative theme news translation were analyzed, which wereselected from the website of China.org.cn (China Internet Information Center) so as toformulate a set of general principles for negative theme news translation. The study exploredhow to deliver the original information correctly and rapidly to the target readers of differentbackgrounds with functionalist approaches, in terms of Reiss’s text typology, Skopostheorieof Vermeer and Nord’s function plus loyalty. Meanwhile, it examined the characteristics ofthe collected news, and the strategies being used in each sentence were studied. Under theguidance of functionalist approaches, the results of the data analysis revealed thecharacteristics of negative theme news translation: correct orientation, objectivity and fairness,accuracy and precision; the most frequently used strategies for negative theme newstranslation: adaptation, deletion and interpretation.These findings are very inspirational for applying functionalist approaches to negative themenews translation so as to make negative theme news translation more understandable.
