The term "Hui Ben" is originated from Japan, with its English name "Picturebook". In1976, Zheng Mingjin, a child artist in Taiwan, translated the term "Picturebook" into "Hui Ben", and it is generalized rapidly."Hui Ben", as the term suggests, is a text consisted of drawings, with some corresponding and key words added. By a certain way of tacit understanding between pictures and words, it shows its meaning and creates a poetic reading realm. With the coming of "reading pictures times" and the characteristics of "mass culture", the special artistic form has welcomed in a golden period of multiply and evolution, and it has been applied in the area of visual communication design because of its unique artistry and expressive force.By using many methods, such as investigation, literature research, and case analysis, this paper studies picturebook art from the view of aesthetics, sociology, psychology and design theory. It introduces the basic laws and skill points. It also mainly discusses the functions and disadvantages of picturebook art application in visual communication, as well as application forms in traditional media and new media, which provides the adaptive integrated point for the combination of picturebook art and visual communication design.There are four parts in this paper. The first part introduces the history and the present situation of picturebook art, as well as its developing level in different countries. The creative techniques and making mode of picturebook art are explored in the second part. The third part studies the effects of picturebook art on different readers and the audience, as well as its success and challenge facing commercial market. The four part mainly discusses the disadvantages, manifestation and development space of picturebook art in the area of visual communication. This paper is expected to promote the application and development of picturebook in visual communication design through systematic analysis and research.
