English learning has been paid more attention to in our country since the21century,however, there exist still a lot of students who have difficulty in learning English and cannot express themselves well in English. One of the main reasons is that they cannot remember the words or they can remember the words but do not know how to use them appropriately. The problem increases the difficulty of learning English and lowers students’confidence of learning English, and therefore gets them to lose interest in English learning.Looking up abundant materials about English teaching, the author finds that for Chinese students, the lexical approach has a lot of advantages and it is a good way to solve this problem, but the researches on how to apply lexical chunks into comprehensive English teaching in detail are few.Based on the theoretical foundations of Language Acquisition, Psychology, and Corpus Linguistics, this thesis first proposes a detailed procedure of applying lexical chunks into English listening, speaking, reading and writing classes by presenting some concrete teaching samples to us. This thesis is finished on the basis of an action research, and the author carries on an experiment according to the theoretical guidance among non-English majors in college. The subjects are the freshmen of two classes from School of Urban and Rural Construction in Chengdu University, one as the control class, the other as the experimental class. Besides. the auxiliary activities include asking the students to do two questionnaires and take two tests before and after the research.After the four-month research. the author sorts out and analyzes the statistics and finds that the detailed procedures of applying lexical chunks into English teaching are feasible and effective. The detailed approach can increase the students’interest of learning English and improve their comprehensive English proficiency. However, there is still something to be improved in the research, so the author need to do further researches.
