In2006, the Turkish writer Orhan Pamuk with his autobiographicwork Istanbul: Memories of a City won the Nobel Prize for literature. In pursuit ofidentity and the conflict between the eastern and western are the maincharacteristics in Pamuk’s novels. This perception is not only appearing in thisnovel, but also run throughout all his works. Based on the unique history,geographical position and culture of Turkey, this thesis chooses the representativeworks of Pamuk try to combine those elements to discus the causes of identity’s lost.In this way, we can understand the perspective of Pamuk for identity and thedifferences between the eastern and western more deeply.In the chapter I, we try to analyze the influence of the center of the worldphilosophy to Turkish’ identity. The discussion for the center of the world isconstructing by two aspects: the history and religious belief of Turkey. At the sametime, in order to comprehend the thinking of Pamuk about identity, we discuss thisphilosophy’s lost wrote in Pamuk’s works. In this way, we can understand Pamuk’sexploration of identity.The second chapter is based on the text The New Life, discuss the murder plotof this novel, and the procedure of identity pursue. In this chapter, we will analyzethe depicting of Turkey’s social realities in Pamuk’s work, to understand theexploration of Pamuk for the way out of his country. On that basis, combined withHomi Bhabha’ hybridity theory to discuss the attitude and choice of Pamuk. Andthen, we can comprehend Pamuk’s idea, which means the cultural hybridity maysave Turkey’s future.The third chapter is based on the text Black Book. In the first section, combinewith Lacan’s theory of mirror to expound the identity’s split when the individuallost his memories. In the second section, we will discuss Pamuk’s exploration fornational identity on the history. Pamuk try to awaken Turkey’s national memoriesand tradition art, and then combine with the modern western culture. Pamuk want torescue the lacerated souls of Turkey, and in this way, he try to construct a complete national identity for the country.
