At the beginning of Song Dynasty, the theme of literature isenjoyment and decadence. There were many essays with flowery language butempty,just as literature the Tang and the Five Dynasties were. Considering this,Tian Xi learnt much from others and achieved a lot. He combined the theroy“Tongbian " created by Liu Xie with the spirit of Han Liu’s ancient prose movement.As a result, he put forward different opinions---for instance,“Flowery languagedoesn’t express orthodox ideas.’”“A poem is another form of essays.”, which areunique thoughts in literature. Holding this belief, he produced manymasterpieces,with Li Bai’s Heroic style of writing and Lv Wen’s elegance.The origin of Tian Xi’s writing and thoughts in literature is closely related tohis family background, educational background and life experience. This paper,based on a brief account of TianXi’s life and his historical background, from whichwe can find the realistic basis of his literary activities,and then we can fullyunderstand histheroy by appreciating his collection called 《Xianpingji》. In total, Tian Xibelieved that “word should be natural when writing”,and he adopted a comprisingattitude to the writing style of the Five Dynasties,which reflected his dialecticalthought and his profound impaction on the following writers. Besides, as a memberof BaShu culture writer, he accepted BaShu’s literature forms and reflected itstraditional culture and characteristic through his literature activities and thoughts.Applied to the theroy “three factors”put forward by Tanner, this paper will discussTianXi ‘s literature activities and this thoughts with BaShu characteristic, trying tofind out the relationship between Tian Xi and his social background andgeographical environment.
