The Sui and early Tang Dynasty are the two important stages in thedevelopment of Dunhuang mural art, which has a great significance forthe study of the artistic style of each period of the Dunhuang murals. TheSui Dynasty, a unified dynasty after300years of division of the Wei, Jinand Nanbei Dynasty in the Chinese history, has the characteristics ofintegration and innovation in Dunhuang murals development history.Dunhuang is not stable and in turmoil in the Tang Dynasty (A.D.618-704). It restored to calm until The Tang Dynasty moved AnxiProtectorate to Qiuci in A.D.658to guard the Western Region. Dunhuangmurals were inevitably affected by decades of turmoil, but it still chiseled46new caves which has the characteristics of magnificent artistic features.The study of ancient murals focused more on the Han and Tang Dynasty,and is relatively few on the Sui and early Tang Dynasty. Therefore, as anera of far-reaching impact on the Chinese murals history and evenpainting history, taking an in-depth comparison and study from its artstyle view is the essence of this paper. It will provide more theoreticalbasis for the study of murals artistic style. it also provides some directionand reference for the future development of the mural.
