Expressing artists should be a significant theme of the20th century literature, because only the complicated personality can assume the responsibility of showing the morbid mental of this developing society. Thus this paper makes the images of a artists in a number of modern novels as the objects of the study, and will bases on the analysis of specific works as textual support, makes the modern experience which is about current "life" and "art" and their subtle connection which is put forward by Baudelaire and Benjamin as a cut-in-point of theory, and then combines with the related theory of literature and art to analyze this literary phenomenon. Finally, this paper will draw a conclusion about the images of the characters in the novels with multifaceted and multiple inspection. Digging up that how an individual artist compose the Ukiyoe about modern artistic spirit as a group. Thereby profoundly reveals the survival situation of their dilemma. This paper will relates and analyzes specifically from the following main several aspects.In the introduction part, settling the present research achievements about the novels including this paper, clearing the significance and innovation about this paper and its topic, and stating the methods and the framework of content of this paper.In the first part, analyzing the desire that artists has faced in the reality that breeds endless modern temptation and their destruction or detachment, pointing out that there have been two very different ways which divided under the temptation of the fame and benefits and the market interests, and they also have to face the lust from the body.In the second part, pointing out that the artists’ profound and complicated Pygmalion-complex has changed into self-centered worship in modern narrative. The portrait has become the objective entity of the contradiction between artists themselves and others, and exploded the mental defects of painters at the mean time. This obsession has internalized a self-destructive force, and led to the end of artists’ lives finally.In the third part, tracing the evil tradition of artists, and then exploring the integrating points between the images of painters in the novels and some neurosis personalities of era from the spiritual level. They face some kind of stimulation that the real world cannot given to them, so they focus on finding themselves in another stimulation. These demands have made them into a mental disorder and bewilderment, but they also won the self-death and rebirth constantly or the newly born of artistic life.In the fourth part, pointing out that whether foreign cultural imagination or a lyrical imagination of alternate space, writers’ thinking about the ending of artists’art life has fit the speculation about "finishing" and "starting" of the theoretical thinking of "The End of Art" to some extent, which is also another kind of sense of redemption and revolt to artists.Finally comes to the conclusion, the images of painters in modern narrative should be a significant phenomenon of20th century literature. As a representative of artists’ individual life tension, they have reflected the integrating points between the inherent logic of modernity and symptoms of time to a certain extent.
