Thanks to the deepening globalization in the twenty first century, communication and exchanges among countries are becoming frequent. As significant bridges, connecting China with other countries in the perspective of politics, economy and culture, interpreters exhibit an essential role in such a developmental trend. Escort interpreting requests sentences interpreting with accuracy in a short time without the help of taking notes and the like, which has a high demand for interpreters’ competence in language, translation and tacking problems. In escort interpreting, the interpreters will employ some skills or theories consciously or unconsciously, one of which is Grice’s Cooperative Principle which describes how people interact with each other. In order to complete a smooth and successful communication, listeners and speakers must comply with some principles to make each other understood. However, even though Grice proposes the Cooperative Principle, he also points out that people will not strictly observe its maxims; on the contrary, they will violate or flout the conversational maxims of it via various ways in daily communication. This thesis studies from the perspective of the Cooperative Principle, intends to analyze the factors that may cause communication problems and finds out coping tactics for escort interpreting. Through analyzing various escort interpreting examples with the Cooperative Principle, the author discovers that interpreters would flout the conversational maxims in the Cooperative Principle in some occasions, and sometimes they would observe them. However, no matter what kind of ways interpreters select, to flout or to observe, the ultimate purpose is to ensure a smooth process of the escort interpreting. As the bridge to connect the speakers and the listeners, the interpreters assist them to cooperate with each other by observing or flouting the conversational maxims in the Cooperative Principle.
