On Liaison Interpreter's Facilitating Role In Communication From The Perspective Of Cooperative Principle

Fundamentally,interpreting is a means of human communication performed by individuals with language proficiency in a particular situation of interaction.It combines both listening and speaking to facilitate effective information exchange and gains extra complexity due to its inter-lingual nature.To a certain extent,the function of an interpreter is an intermediary,that is to say,to mediate or regulate both involved parties and promote understanding.With this precondition,we may apply the Cooperative Principle from conversation studies in the analysis of interpreting practice.We can also apply the principle in liaison interpreting analysis.Liaison interpreting is featured by immediate short talking turns and a wide range of contents,thus liaison interpreting practitioners shoulder more communicative duty compared with their colleagues practicing conference interpreting.Based on the four maxims of the Cooperative Principle,this report analyzes the obedience and disobedience of the principle in liaison interpreting practice done by the interpreter at match-making sessions of Chinese and German(European)enterprises during the 2nd China-Germany SME Conference.It is discovered that liaison interpreters follow the requirements of the principle in liaison interpreting practice and the flout of the maxims also serves as means of facilitating communication.However,due to the basic requirement of “accuracy” in interpreting,the maxim of quality shall always be obeyed.To achieve successful communication,the interpreter deployed skills such as addition,deletion and restructuring.
