With the rapid development of globalization and increasing exchanges of cross-cultural communication, interpreting has been playing a more significant role and interpreters are confronted with unprecedented opportunities as well as challenges in the current society. Jointly hosted by Translators Association of China (TAC) and Higher Education Press (HEP), CTPC Cup All China Interpreting Contest is a national contest for promising interpreters to show their blaze and drums on testing capabilities of two languages, cross-cultural communication, field interpreting and language transformation of the candidates in the form of interpreting. Under strict layers of screening, the contest has drawn more than1500students all over China including HK and Macao special administrative regions. All of the candidates are the cream of the crop, so that their performances of field interpreting are a mirror of the level of Chinese would-be interpreters, most of whom are English majors. As a result, to conduct such a research is both practical and innovative in the current society where more and more qualified interpreters are needed.Based on the analysis of record of the candidates performances of the first and second season of CTPC cup (ACIC), the influences including misunderstanding in sense, loss of information and Chinglish expression brought by linguistic differences on the candidates are investigated in the thesis. Through systematical analyses of the causes of such differences based on some on-the-spot contest of CTPC Cup, this study attempts to illustrate clearly the phenomena of linguistic differences by virtue of lexical, grammatical, syntactic and textual aspect and challenges in the candidates’language transformation ability and cultural awareness. In the end tentative solutions such as interpretation and abstraction, syntactical division, semantic amplification are proposed in the thesis. The solutions ran the gamut from word to context hoping to be helpful for candidates to handle properly the future contests they’ll participate in.The thesis is generally composed of three chapters. Chapter one introduces the features of CTPC Cup All China Interpreting Contest and quality specifications of consecutive interpreting widely recognized. Chapter two clearly discusses the phenomena, influences and challenges of linguistic differences in the performances. Chapter three gives some tentative methods to bridge linguistic differences by referring to the quality specifications of consecutive interpreting and reproduction of veteran interrupters of the state level. The last part serves as a conclusion which presents major findings and limitations of the thesis.
