International communication, such as political, economic and cultural exchanges, is particularly important nowadays. As an efficient tool to smooth the interaction between China and other countries, interpretation has developed rapidly in China. In order to answer the call of the market, the Academic Degrees Committee under the State Council released the list of the newly increased15universities nationwide for the education of Master of Translation and Interpreting (MTI) in2007. It is a requirement for all the MTI students to participate in various types of field work in real life. During her postgraduate year, the author has participated in Superboy Show of Hunan TV as a liaison interpreter, Australia delegation visiting Changsha as a consecutive interpreter and2013Asia-Pacific international academic conference on green economy and management innovation and12th meeting of academic exchange of East-Asia as a simultaneous interpreter. Besides that, the author has also participated in several interpreting contest, such as the CTPC Cup All China Interpreting Contest and the Cross-Strait Interpreting Contest. As a unique form of interpreting field work, the interpreting contest is a regular contest which provides the contestant enough time and direction to prepare for it. In the task preparation process, the author has built up her own system through training and self-practices. Among those interpreting filed works, the interpreter chose the perspective of interpreting contest. To write this practice report, the author will take her experience in preparing, training and participating in the Fourth Cross Strait Interpreting Contest. There are mainly three parts in this filed work report:preparation before contest, strategies applied in the contest and the summary after the contest.As the main testing form of the Cross-Strait Interpretation Competition, the author first introduces the definition and process of consecutive interpreting. Then she gives a detailed description of the history of the interpreting contest and the Fourth Cross-Strait Interpreting Contest. After that she summarizes the importance of training in the preparation process. This paper will discuss the process-oriented approach in training and the respective strategies involved in the process. Meanwhile, the author will provide the training materials and relative methods in this paper. In the interpreting contest, the speakers tends to speak in a formal and fixed way, thus the interpreter’s subjectivity is not that obvious. Thus, the author decides to use the effort model theory to study relative cases through the perspective of listening and analyze effort model, memory effort model, note effort model and production effort model. In that matter, the author offers the relative strategies under each effort model. At last, the author summarizes the experience of the contest, reflects upon the fatal mistakes she made which leads her failing the contest and puts forward the suggestion for further study.The thesis is composed of introduction and four chapters.Chapter one introduces consecutive interpreting and the Cross-Strait Interpreting Contest. In this chapter, the author makes definition of consecutive interpreting and its process. For the introduction of the contest, she introduces the history of the contest and the details of the fourth interpreting contest, including contents, consisting parts and evaluation standard.Chapter Two discusses the importance of training in task preparation process and its relevant methods and strategies.Chapter Three studies the cases in the interpreting contest through Gile’s effort model. She puts forward several strategies and coping tactics in the interpreting contest under each effort to make classification with the help of reference of transcript.The last chapter presents the conclusion for the whole experience. The author reflects upon the fatal mistakes she made in the contest and puts forward suggestion for further study.
