Sino-Japanese Cultural Misreading From The Perspective Of Equivalence Principle

As recorded by the Bible, in the world without translation activity, the humansociety once was in chaos, and the successive wars enabled people to realize thenecessity and inevitability of translation. In history, the independent development ofsingle language, mutual integration&exchange among different languages happenedsimultaneously. It can be seen that the historical status of translation research, whichis very urgent, is not second to that of language research. Especially nowadays, withfrequent cross-linguistic cultural communicative activities, it cannot be overlooked.In addition to the importance of translation itself, translators engaging in translationactivity are also closely related to the social fate. If translators fail to remindthemselves of the important responsibility on their shoulder, even a little carelessnessmay fall short of success for lack of a final effort, leading to immeasurable result.This is also why it is critical to study mistranslation.In fact, human society is characterized by universality and diversity, which show abinary opposition. With these characteristics, the foundation for the necessity ofresearch on translation can be analyzed. Various cultural differences in geography,nationality, history, religion, political system, codes of language, etc. have separatedall groups, forming into the individual difference of the society; for another, inaddition to all these characteristic attributes, there are lots of common grounds inhuman society and the common understanding also promotes the development oftranslation activity and as well equivalent theory. As an open translation theory, theequivalent theory strives to accomplish the common appeal of all schools based onabsorbing the ideas of other theories. This paper tries to make use of equivalenceprinciple to focus on explaining non-common factors separating human society inliterary translation.Among massive literary works, Lu Xun’s articles have great significance to carryforward Chinese culture and it is the treasure of modern Chinese literature as well. Inliterary translation, translators’ failure of reflecting the specific information in sourcelanguage culture would bring difficulty to readers in reading translated works. Bycombining with the translation theory based on equivalence principle, this papermakes an attempt at analyzing the origin and differences among Sino-Japaneseculture. Besides, it also analyze the misreading and mistranslation phenomena ofcultural interference factors of equivalence principle in Japanese-version The True Story of Ah Q, including the cognitive habits of ghosts culture, naming custom ofplace and site, the translation of proverbs, the absence of historical trend, themisplacement of religious culture, the false equivalence caused by homographs inChinese and Japanese, etc. At last, it emphasizes the microscopic theory of absorbingthe cultural connotation and customs in literary translation rather than blindlypursuing the superficial translation result and elaborates the application andorientation grasping of equivalence principle in cultural translation.
